Ozbaki Ancient Site

Ozbaki Hill is one of the most important ancient sites in Iran, which is located in the Ozbaki village of Nazarabad, a city in Alborz province. Ozbaki Ancient Site was discovered in 1969 and inscribed on the list of national monuments of Iran in 1973.

Archaeological excavations have been carried out on the Ozbaki Hill from 1998 to 2005; later, restoration operations have been carried out in order to provide more protection. This ancient site can be considered to have an area of approximately one hundred hectares, with a collection of seven ancient hills, known as Yan Tappeh, Jiran Tappeh, Dushan Tappeh, Maral Tappeh, Gumush Tappeh, a hill called Ozbaki area and the main Ozbaki Hill.

Ozbaki Ancient Site Hills

The most significant hill in Ozbaki Ancient Site of Alborz province is the main Ozbaki hill, called Median fortress, which is attributed to the Medes and the Iron Age; the Ozbaki hill has original features of Median architecture. One of the most important archeological findings is the monuments in Yan Tappeh and Jeiran Tappeh, which are similar to  Qazvin Zagheh Tappeh monument in terms of architectural plan. Nine thousand-year-old handmade clay discovered in Yan Tappeh is one of the most interesting architectural works obtained from this area. Researchers consider this brick, now preserved in the United Nations, to be the oldest man-made clay. The other most important artifacts discovered in Yan Tappeh is a building known as the Colorful Temple with a religious function; the walls of this building are ocher in color. The Elamite tablets of the Maral Tappeh, which is a kind of document for the commercial cooperation between Susa and Ozbaki, are among the most interesting works obtained from the Ozbaki hill. An earthenware dish with the role of humans, goats, cheetahs and plants has been found in Yan Tappeh, which is one of the most important pottery works in Iran; Dr. Majidzadeh, the head of excavations in the area interpreted the designs of this dish as the philosophy of life. Dushan Tappeh, in spite of various architectural spaces such as columned halls, and warehouses for grain storage, is one of the architecturally significant works of the Iron Age. Ozbaki hill is one of the most important attractions of Alborz province, which is considered as a symbol of Alborz province.
