Sheikh Safi Al-din Khangah and Shrine

Sheikh Safi Al-din Khangah and Shrine Ensemble is located in Ardabil. As an Iranian tangible cultural heritage in UNESCO list, it was built in 14th century and rebuilt in 18th century.

Different Sections 

This complex consists of various sections including the tomb of Sheikh Safi al-Din, the grave of King Ismail I, the portal, the great courtyard, the, the Women-only space, Chini-house with eye-catching Stuccos and many priceless wooden and silver doors, Khanqah, cheraqkhaneh, which means house of lights, Chellehkhaneh or a praying room, the burial ground of the martyrs and other belongings. The juxtaposition of many different outstanding works of art including Mosaic tile, Muqarnas, beautiful stucco inscriptions, the calligraphy of the great Safavid artists, wood carving, manuscript, Gilding, painting, etc. is the remarkable feature of Sheikh Safi Al-din Khangah and Shrine.

Sheikh Safi Al-din used to live 700 years ago. As a spiritual leader of his time, Sheikh Safi inherited Zahediyeh from his master, a Sunni Muslim, and transformed it into “Safaviyya”, believing in twelve Imam denomination of Shiite branch. Eventually, his followers obtained the political and military power over that area. In the early 17th century, a group of his adherents headed by Shah Ismail founded Safavid dynasty in Iran and brought a religious government to power for the second time.
