Maragheh Ilkhani Museum

Maragheh Ilkhani Museum is the first specialized museum of Ilkhanid works in Iran. This museum is located in Maragheh city, next to the tomb of the famous Maragheh poet, Rokanuddin Owhadi Maragheh.

This museum was established in 1985 and it started its activities as the specialized Ilkhani museum in 1996 due to the importance of Maragheh as the first capital of the Mongol Ilkhanid in Iran. In addition to Ilkhanid works, works related to other historical periods are also on the exhibit here; other works of Maragheh Ilkhani Museum are related to the first millennium BC, the Parthian and Sassanid periods, which are exhibited in separate sections. In general, this museum has a very high diversity and acquaints tourists with the details of Iranian life during Ilkhanid era. Sections of Maragheh Ilkhani Museum

The sections of the Maragheh Ilkhani Museum are very interesting. These sections have valuable works including collections of pottery, coins, glass, metal, stone, etc. In the pottery section of the museum, you can get acquainted with different types of pottery, their designs and decorations, and common pottery methods of Ilkhanid period. Among the most important works of this section, we can mention its golden-colored pottery, which was one of the common techniques of Ilkhanid period. In the coins section, coins of the Ilkhanid period are displayed; these coins are made of gold, silver and copper, and have been minted in various cities of the vast territory. These coins are of special importance due to the variety of designs, lines and themes. In the metal part of this collection are also valuable specimens of metal utensils, tallow burners and candlesticks of the Ilkhanid period which are decorated with engraving and casting. In the glass section of Maragheh Ilkhani Museum, interesting works of Ilkhanid glass are kept, which are made by different methods of glassmaking. In the writing section of the museum, you can also see Qurans whose verses are written on imported papers from China and have beautiful decorations. In addition, court works and gilded swords on ivory and bronze are kept in this museum, which belong to Karikhan Ibn Bahadur Khan, the governor of Dagestan. Afshari cannonballs, inscriptions and stone pillars of Sheikh Baba Timurid Mosque, works from Maragheh Observatory, works from the historical dome of Maragheh, mother statue from prehistoric times, are other valuable works on display in this museum. There is an Islamic tombstone outside the museum, which is very famous for its designs.
