Saholan cave

Saholan Cave, one of the largest water caves in Iran, is located 43 km northeast of Mahabad on the Mahabad-Bukan axis in West Azerbaijan. This cave, located near a village with the same name, is one of the unique natural caves in the country and the most amazing natural landscapes of West Azerbaijan.

According to some locals, this cave has been the habitation for some Parthian people. The term Saholan in Kurdish means frost, local people; however, call this cave Kooneh Kooter, meaning pigeon nest because of a large number of pigeon nests inside the cave. This cave has been studied and analyzed many times over; according to some experts’ researches conducted based on the clay layers obtained from the main corridor, the Great Hall and the entrance hall of Kuneh Malan, this cave has been inhabited by humans since the first and second millennia BC to the Parthian and Islamic periods and even in the Middle Ages.Saholan water Cave has been approved as a national natural monument by the Supreme Council of Environment.

Saholan Cave Entrances

Saholan Cave has two entrances, one with 178 and the other with 107 stairs, these two are used for entrance and exit. After going through these stairs, you get to a depth of 30 meters, but as you approach the depth of the ground and the bottom of the cave, the air pressure increases, the oxygen decreases and the humidity reaches 78%. This cave consists of two parts, water and land, so there are places for both caving and boat riding because of three ponds or lakes. The average depth of the ponds is 15 meters and its deepest part is 31 meters. The temperature difference is between 10 to 15 degrees inside and outside the cave, which varies between 10 and 13 degrees Celsius in summer and winter. Since the humidity of the cave is between 70 to 80%, you can see rocks and cliffs covered with green and brown mosses. The first lake that tourists will see is about 200 meters wide, the corridor above the lake is more than 50 meters high and at the end, two narrow corridors with a width of two meters can be seen that make the way to the next lakes and corridors. The inner area of Saholan cave is about 600 square meters and the water depth reaches to 32 meters in some places. The water of the cave lake is very clear. Although it is dark, its depth is visible up to a few meters. This cave with a favorable weather is a destination for many domestic and foreign tourists due to its beautiful environment and amazing scenery.
