The name of this church is derived from the name of a bishop named "Hovhannes Yerznaqatsi" known as "Dzor Dzortsi" and the construction of the structure dates back to the fourteenth century AD by "St. Thaddeus". Dzordzor was able to train 12 world-renowned clergies in the Catholic Church, including Bishop Hovhannes, who was known as Archbishop and head of the Deir Karna Scientific Center (an important center of the Catholic Church in Nakhchivan region) in 1950. The construction of Dzor Dzor chapel was accomplished by the Archbishop of the St. Thaddeus Church, named Zakaria, and became one of the religious, cultural and literary education centers. The facade of the structure is simple, stony, in cruciform and rectangular, and more like a prayer hall. The area of this church is almost 7 meters long and 5 meters wide; its height is more than 12 meters and it has a dome with 16 blades and 4 sunshades below it and 4 other sunshades in the four walls around it. 4 gables are located on 4 perimeter walls and 4 arches are installed inside the structure. The entrance of the church is made of metal. One of the construction techniques of this church is pinching the stones together and hiding the mortar away from the viewers. Cross arrays are also carved on the stones. In 1988, Dzordzor Church was submerged by the flooding of the Baron Dam. With the help of Armenians and Iranian cultural heritage experts, it was removed from its place, transferred to its current position and reassembled. Today, the beauty of the lake behind the dam has added to the beautiful view of this structure.
