Siraf grand mosque in Bushehr

Siraf grand mosque in Bushehr

Siraf grand Mosque is one of the unique and valuable historical monuments of Siraf ancient port in Bushehr province. This mosque, which is one of the mosques of the beginning of Islam, is built with the pattern of pillared nave mosques and on buildings from the Sassanid period.

Its architecture is similar to the architecture of Isfahan, Naein and Fahraj mosques. The architectural remains of the Siraf Grand Mosque were discovered during archeological excavations by a joint Iranian-British group led by David Whitehouse in the western part of Siraf Port (Taheri). The main courtyard of the mosque is 30 x 12 meters, which is surrounded by columns. The base of the mosque is made of stone and mortar and on top of it, the walls of the mosque are erected, which was destroyed by an earthquake that occurred years ago. As a result of the excavations in the building, fifty-two columns were revealed. The remains of the Siraf Grand Mosque, which was registered as one of the national monuments of Iran on October 28, 2002, with the registration number 6503, have been severely damaged due to its location by the sea. For this reason, in order to protect this historical monument, the Cultural Heritage Organization of Bushehr Province has constructed a protective wall on the coastal edge for the remains of the mosque. By building this wall, sea water will be prevented from penetrating the building. Cleaning the environment and removing shrubs that had grown inside the building are other activities taken to protect the building.
