Siraf Historical cemetery

Siraf Historical cemetery

The ancient cemetery of Siraf, also known as the Rock Cemetery of Siraf, the Cemetery of Civilizations, the burial mounds of the Lear Valley, is located northwest of the port of Siraf.

The graves of this cemetery are scattered from Lear Valley to Shilou Valley. This cemetery is one of the most attractive and amazing attractions of Bushehr province. The smooth surface of the Lear Valley, which has a relatively gentle slope to the sea and the port of Siraf, is a suitable ground for the creation of countless stone burial tombs of the Sassanid period, which is continued by Islamic burials. The ancient cemetery of Siraf in Bushehr province has been registered in the list of national monuments of Iran on October 28, 2002, number 6502.

Features and architecture of the ancient cemetery of Siraf

The burial mounds (tower of silence) of the ancient cemetery of Siraf have different shapes and dimensions that have been created in the soft layers of sedimentary rocks or in the hard layers of sandstones of Siraf valley. Researchers believe that the form of burial mounds and their soil type somehow represent the social class of the deceased. The burial mounds with geometric entrance frames and regular, rectangular space carved in layers of sandstone belonged to the affluent strata of the society of that day. The burial mounds that were created in soft and fragile layers and did not have a geometric shape belonged to the lower classes of the society.

Most of the bony remains of these burial mounds have been destroyed. In Siraf rocky valley, in addition to the burial mounds, there are thousands of tombs of. These stone tombs are 2.10 meters long and 50 centimeters wide and are about 40 to 60 centimeters deep. These tombs are seen as two large cemeteries in the east and west of the Lear Valley. The western front cemetery of the Lear Valley does not correspond to the direction of the qibla, but the eastern half has the direction of the qibla and is closer to the burial tradition of the Islamic period. For this reason, the age of this cemetery complex is known as Sassanid-Sadr-e-Islam. Some researchers believe that these tombs were originally used as rainwater collection pits and were later used for burial. In the middle of the cemetery, the remains of four large stone pillars measuring about two and a half meters by two meters thick and about three to four meters high can be seen. Some researchers consider the use of these columns to be the tower of silence. The Tower of Silence was a place where Zoroastrians placed the bodies of their dead to feed on predators and birds, leaving only their bones.
