In the past, this route connected the Iranian plateau to Mesopotamia, but now, due to the change of route, this road and the arched building are now located on the lower slope of the asphalted road. There are different theories about the time of construction of Sarpol-e-Zahab Taq-e Gara. Some experts attribute it to the Parthian period and others to the Sassanid period and believe that the building was built in the late Sassanid period and probably during the reign of Khosrow II. This ancient monument of Kermanshah province has been registered in the list of national monuments of Iran with the number 33 in 2006.

The architecture of Kermanshah Taq-e Gara

The architecture of Kermanshah Taq-e Gara's building is in the form of a rectangular space that has been created with dimensions of about 5 by 8 meters. The height of the building is about 12 meters and due to the abundance of stone materials, in its construction, rectangular cubic stone blocks and mortar have been used. Gypsum mortar is also used for the interior of the building. The inner walls of this structure are carved by geometric patterns. To level the roof, the surrounding walls have been made somewhat taller. In the highest part of the building, there is a row of congress with a height of 92 cm, which has greatly added to the splendor and beauty of the building. The entrance of Sarpol-e Zahab Taq-e Gara faces south and overlooks the mentioned ancient trade route. This building has no inscription and has only two engraved signs.
Some of the researchers attribute these engraved signs to Parthian dynasty. Generally Taq-e Gara building's architecture is simple and at the same time attractive. About the function of this building, there are different ideas. Some of the researches believe that based on the documents about the location of the building, it had been a border station.
Victory Monument, the royal procession stop, etc. are other functions that researchers have attributed to Taq-e Gara building of Kermanshah.
