Kharaghan twin towers in Qazvin

The towers of Kharqan Qazvin, which have special architecture and decorations, are located in an outlying area and after more than a thousand years since its construction, they still have preserved themselves.

These two towers or tombs are located at a distance of 30 meters and according to existing inscriptions, they were built 26 years apart. The construction time of the first tower is 460 AH and the second tower is 486 AH. Although there is a slight difference in the architecture of Kharqan towers, but the plan of the building and the decorations are very similar to each other.
The towers are built with an octagonal plan and on their eight sides, there are eight circular columns. The dome of the towers has two covers, which from the architectural point of view can be considered as one of the oldest domes that has two inner and outer covers. Unfortunately, due to the passage of time, the outer dome of Kharqan towers in Qazvin has been destroyed. Inside the newer tower there is an altar decorated with brickwork.
Not so long ago, inside each of the two tombs, there was a wooden shrine from the Safavid era, which was considered one of the beautiful works of Safavid art in terms of inlay work. Unfortunately, one of these shrines is missing. The inscription on the remaining shrine indicates that the two towers belong to two religious figures. According to the inscription, the tomb belongs to a person named Muhammad ibn Musa al-Kadhim and his sister Jadid Khatun bint Musa al-Kadhim. Kharqan towers, which are one of the most important attractions of Qazvin province, were registered in the list of national monuments of Iran in 1977.

Decorations of Kharqan towers in Qazvin

Kharqan twin towers have brickwork decorations on all eight sides, stems or necklaces and circular columns. The stem of the dome consists of two parts, which include geometric designs of brickwork and an inscription in Kufic script with Quranic verses. The eight sides of the towers are divided into two parts and have different brickwork designs. There are 25 types of brickwork designs for towers, each of which has a special name. In addition to brickwork, the tiling of Kharqan's twin towers is also very noteworthy. The tiles of Qazvin Kharqan towers, which can be considered as one of the oldest tile decorations, are turquoise and have been used in the front of the building.
The architectural decorations inside the twin tombs of Kharqan are also of special importance. Valuable works of Seljuk murals can be seen on the eight sides inside the towers and under the dome of the older tower, which is unique and very important. The painting inside the tower is done in three parts and mainly in blue, black and brown colors. The role of cresset, peacock, pomegranate tree, six and eight feathered stars, etc. are among the designs used in the building.
