History of Sar Yazd castle in Yazd

The ancient building of Sar yazd Citadel, which is 1700 years old, is located in Sar yazd, located 20 km south of Yazd, and in many ways is a special tourist attraction. The building, which is said to be the largest single-brick building in the world, was built during the Sassanid era as a fortress to store precious treasures out of the reach of invaders. This monument is one of the oldest safes in the world and the presence of numerous jars and closets between the castle rooms shows its function and its importance in ancient times. The history of Sar yazd, according to some historians, dates back to before the history of Yazd and the Sassanid era and even before that. This area is known as the entrance of Yazd city and the main wall that is similar to the Farafar city’s gate, documents the entrance of this area for Yazd province. This complex has been extensively renovated in recent years and has become one of the desirable tourist destinations in Yazd province. In addition to the accommodation and amenities in the complex itself, there is a traditional brick hotel built with the reconstruction of a caravanserai, the Seljuk period. Due to the short distance from the city of Yazd, if you travel to this city, you can easily visit this spectacular and historical complex.
In addition to historical capabilities, this complex currently has recreational facilities such as motorcycling, camel riding, star observation, desert safaris, carriage rides, etc., and accommodation and reception facilities in historical buildings.
The fort was not used for military purposes in ancient times and was used as a storehouse of grain and food. In addition to grain, the villagers kept their money, gold and ornaments in the castle during the raids and looting. Around this building, there is a moat with a width of approximately 6 meters and a depth of approximately 3 to 4 meters, which is the first defensive layer of the castle. In addition, the castle has two involute concentric walls with tall towers and fortifications surrounded by a moat. In 1993, the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Prize for the Restoration and Recovering of this monument was awarded to the Sar yazd Citadel.
