Fahraj Yazd Jameh Mosque

Fahraj Yazd Jameh Mosque is located in a village of the same name in the southeast of Yazd city and on the way to Bafgh. This building is located in the old part of the village and in the southeastern part of Hosseinieh.

This mosque was first introduced by Dr. Karim Pirnia, an Iranian researcher and architect. This ancient building has been registered as one of the national monuments of Iran on December 20, 1970 with the number 906. Fahraj Mosque in Yazd has attracted a lot of attention from tourists who have traveled to Yazd province. This mosque is a display of simple, unpolluted and at the same time glorious architecture that attracts the attention of every viewer. To visit this beautiful building, which is among the unique works of Iran, you can participate in Persian trips tours and get acquainted with the beautiful and interesting architectural style and context of the mosque.

History of Fahraj Yazd Jameh Mosque

Regarding the antiquity of Fahraj Mosque in Yazd, Dr. Pirnia, considering the existence of some decorative arrays and the originality of the architectural elements of the building, believe that the date of construction of the mosque is related to the early Islamic centuries. He probably knows that Fahraj Mosque in Yazd is the oldest mosque in Iran. Although he has not commented on the exact date of construction, but this mosque is generally known as a remnant of the first century AH. After Dr. Pirnia, other scholars studied this Fahraj mosque and each of them presented a different date for its construction except the first century AH. Mehrdad Shokouhi suggested the second century, Zipoli and Alfiri, the fourth century, and Finster of the late third and early fourth centuries AH as the date of construction of the building. In the southwestern part of the mosque, the remains of a rectangular nave can be seen in addition to the main nave of the mosque. This section seems to have been used as a winter seraglio. Architects and archaeologists, considering the available evidence such as differences in the style of covering, location outside, the dimensions of the bricks used in this section, etc., believe that this section was built later than other parts of the building. On the other hand, considering the similar size and dimensions of the brick that have been used in the construction of this nave and the minaret of the mosque, the hypothesis of building both the minaret and the nave at the same time can be considered. Dr. Pirnia considers the date of construction of the minaret of Fahraj Mosque in Yazd to be the 4th or 5th lunar century.

Architecture of Fahraj Yazd Jameh Mosque

The architecture of Yazd Jameh Mosque has a unique splendor and beauty at the same time. At first glance, this mosque may not look like a mosque due to the lack of a dome and the lack of decorative tiles that have been used in most mosques in Iran. The architects of this ancient mosque have created two altars for this historical monument. The first altar, which is the main altar of the building, was made using plaster. This altar has a width of about 2 meters and 40 centimeters and a height of about 3 meters and 25 centimeters and is located at the end of the central opening of the nave. The second altar was created at a very short distance to the west of the main altar and is smaller than the first altar. In the nave of the mosque, there are rectangular columns that all four corners of all columns are decorated with small columns. This mosque has 3 separate entrances, one of which is the current entrance of the building in the southwestern part of the mosque and the other two entrances are on the eastern side of the building, one of which is currently blocked. Another interesting point about Fahraj Yazd Jameh Mosque is the use of the style and method used in the construction and design of Arab mosques, which was common at that time. On the other hand, the oval corners and the presence of rocking arches used in the building indicate the common architectural style in the Sassanid rule and the early period of the rise of Islam.

Plan of Fahraj Yazd Jameh Mosque

The plan of Fahraj Yazd Jameh Mosque consists of a nave and a portico around a central courtyard. The depth of this nave is two openings and the depth of its porch is one opening. There is a low arch above each opening of the nave. The width of the middle opening of the nave, like its similar example, the historical mosque of Damghan, is slightly wider than the two adjacent openings. This size of the middle opening on the qibla side, which emphasizes the altar of the building, is one of the architectural features of Iranian mosques in this period. The height of the nave as the most important part of the mosque is more than other parts of the building. On the other hand, the courtyard of the mosque is not completely square and the northern part is slightly wider than the southern part. Therefore, in order to cover this wider part, which should be less than the nave in the design, the construction of four porch openings was necessary. The cylindrical minaret of Yazd Fahraj Jameh Mosque is located in the northwestern part of the building. This minaret, which is made of brick, has a spiral staircase and its entrance opens into the porch. In general, this building is one of the most interesting tourist attractions in Yazd province.
