Fire Temple of Yazd

Bahram fire temple or Varharam has been a place of worship with a burning fire for Zoroastrians living in Yazd province for 1500 years. Its building was built in 1934 AD by a group of Iranian engineers and the financial assistance of the Parsi Zoroastrians' Association of India. Fire temple is located in the center of Yazd and is still considered one of the most important historical places to visit in this city.

History

This fire was lit during the era of the Sasanian dynasty, around the 5th or 6th century AD, in the fire temple of Azar Farnabgh (specific to the pious class of the Sassanid society), and it is still burning after 1500 years. After the advent of Islam in Iran, this fire was taken to the city of Aqda in Yazd province for 700 years and then moved to the city of Ardakan (again in Yazd) where it was kept carefully for another 300 years.

Finally, in 1474 AD, the sacred fire was taken from Ardakan to Yazd to the house of a Zoroastrian Mobad (Azargashnasab Tirandaz Mobad) and remained there until the construction of the current fire temple building in 1934 AD. The fire of Bahram has not been extinguished even once during these 1500 years and has always been kept burning.

A Tour Inside the Fire Temple

When you enter the area, you will see a large pond that cools the fire temple in hot weather. The whole area is covered with pine and cedar trees. The main building (Varjavand Hall) with the 1500-year-old fire inside is in front of you. Except for fire, pictures, maquettes, and information about Zoroastrian traditions are on display.

This building with the symbol of Fravashi (a Zoroastrian symbol) on top of it, columns taken from Isfahan architecture, and Yazdi tiles, gives a unique effect to the collection. Next to the hall, you can see an old water tank built for storing water. This building was registered on Iran National Heritage List in 2008.
