Abarkooh Ice House

Abarkooh Ice House or Aghazadeh Ice house is one of the spectacular attractions of Abarkooh city located in Yazd province.

Abarkooh has 4 brick glaciers, the largest and most famous of which is Aghazadeh Glacier, which is known as the Brick Glacier. This ice house, which dates back to the Qajar period, is located at the entrance of Abarkooh city

. In general, ice houses have been used to store ice in the past so that they can use ice in the summer. The architecture of the glaciers is almost simple and consists of three parts: shading walls, ice ponds and an ice tank. The ponds were rectangular pits in which ice was prepared on cold winter nights and formed parallel to the shading walls. These walls prevented sunlight from hitting the ice. The ice tank was also a warehouse where ice was stored and a dome was built over it. The ice was also covered with straw. In the architecture of ice house, points such as the appropriate temperature for ice storage, the type of building materials, how to produce and maintain ice and insulation of the building were considered.

Architecture of Abarkooh Ice House

The height of Abarkooh brick ice house is about 22 meters and a dome with a circumference of about 64 meters is located above it. Its walls are about 3 meters thick and its ice tank is 4 meters deep. Abarkooh ice house, like most glaciers, is conical. The plan of the ice house is circular and its dome is made of stairs. The surface inside the ice house is deeper than outside. The materials used in this building are lime, raw clay, wood and mud. The materials used in the building, proper insulation, the height of the dome and the thickness of the brick ice house walls of Abarkooh show the punctuality and skill of the structural architects. Due to the fact that the heat is placed on top of the spaces, the height of the refrigerator dome has been raised so that the ice can be protected from melting on hot summer days. Abarkooh brick ice house was registered as a national monument on 17 December 2002 with the number 7752.
